Grand Harbour has heard ships for four hundred years. Then, on two consecutive days, something new: MSC World Europa and EXPLORA II berthed beneath the bastions, connected to shore power, and switched their engines off. A first for MSC Group's Cruise Division. The harbour went quiet, and the story got loud.
Koala was entrusted to capture it, from concept to final frame. A milestone this significant, celebrated in the presence of Malta's Prime Minister and senior government officials, needed more than event coverage. It needed a film that could explain what shore power means and why Valletta matters on MSC's pathway toward net zero emissions by 2050.
Concept creation. The idea was silence. A vessel the size of a city, running on the grid instead of its engines, eliminating local emissions while berthed. We built the narrative around that contrast: the scale of the ships against the stillness of the connection, engineering told as atmosphere. Two vessels, two days, one story.
Film. The strategy film moves from harbour to detail and back. The approach of MSC World Europa past the bastions. The cable, the connection, the moment the switch happens. EXPLORA II following a day later. Cut with the numbers that carry the message: some 300 hours connected in Valletta since 2024, half a month of local emissions eliminated, 18 vessels across the fleet now equipped. A corporate milestone, delivered with cinematic weight.
Photography. Stills built for every channel the story would travel. The vessels at berth beneath the fortifications. The ceremony and its principals. The engineering up close. Composed to serve press, social and MSC's own sustainability storytelling, each frame usable on its own and stronger in sequence.
Two ships. One harbour. The quietest milestone Grand Harbour has ever hosted.
