A crimson regatta boat cuts across the harbour. An old bus, painted like a sweet wrapper, idles in the square. Somewhere behind the walls of a former palace, a retreat waits in silence. This is not the Malta of postcards. This is the Malta worth a book.
When Assouline, the New York publishing house behind the world's most collected coffee table books, released Malta Heritage, Koala was entrusted with the campaign. The brief reached beyond a book launch. This was Malta's introduction to an international audience, told through the pages of a legendary publisher. Our answer was a single organising idea: the true colours of Malta.
Concept creation. Assouline had captured Malta's story across its pages. Our job was to capture its palette. We built the campaign around the colours the island actually wears. The reds and yellows of the traditional regatta boats. The chrome and paintwork of the classic buses. The deep greens and honeyed stone of its most guarded retreats. Culture on one side, luxury on the other, one colour story binding them.
Brand positioning. Assouline's shelf is where destinations become legends. Capri sits there. Saint Tropez sits there. The campaign positioned Malta as the island that belongs beside them. To the international collector, Malta Heritage is an invitation to a place they have not yet discovered. To Malta, it is recognition on the world stage. We held both truths in every asset, living culture presented with the codes of luxury.
Photography. We shot where the book lives. Regatta boats at water level. The geometry of a vintage bus in morning light. The quiet grandeur of retreats like Verdala and Iniala, where the island's luxury turns inward. Stills composed like plates from the book itself, so the campaign and the object feel cut from the same cloth.
Video. The films move the way the island does. Slow where Malta is slow, vivid where it is vivid. Colour led sequences carry the viewer from harbour to hilltop to hushed interior, closing on the book itself, an island distilled into linen and ink.
One island, in its true colours, on the world's shelf.
